What Are Microdots and Why Are They Important for Your Vehicle?

When it comes to protecting your vehicle from theft, microdot technology is one of the most effective tools available—and in South Africa, it’s also a legal requirement for certain vehicles.

Microdots are microscopic polymer discs, each smaller than 1mm, laser-etched with your vehicle’s unique VIN (Vehicle Identification Number). These tiny identifiers are sprayed onto multiple areas of your vehicle—often more than 10,000 locations—making it nearly impossible for criminals to remove all traces of your car’s identity.

Even if a vehicle is stripped down or parts are sold off, law enforcement can trace them back using microdot identification. This acts as a strong deterrent to theft, while also improving the chances of recovery.

In South Africa, microdot fitment is mandatory for:

  • All newly manufactured vehicles,
  • Rebuilt vehicles, and
  • Vehicles requiring police clearance.

The National Road Traffic Act makes this requirement clear, and without microdotting, you won’t be able to complete a roadworthy inspection or register your vehicle.

At VTEQ Roadworthy, we ensure your vehicle complies with all legal safety and anti-theft standards—including verified microdot inspection and certification.
